Muscle Relaxants To Treat Low Back Pain

September 10th, 2009

Treatment of lower back pain can be done with the help of many muscle relaxants available today. The muscle relaxant drugs work in such a way that they stop the signals from passing from the nerve which causes the pain to the brain. This helps in stopping the muscles from contracting and tightening and hence slowly alleviates the pain.

There are many muscle relaxants that claim to provide instant relief from the back pain. A study was done and few tests were conducted where few drugs were compared with each other in treating few people suffering from the acute low back pain. Carisoprodol significantly emerged as the most efficient drug when compared to other sedative controls. It proved effective as both – a subjective pain reliever and objective improvement drug.

Other muscle relaxant medicines like Cyclobenzaprine and Naproxen were taken into consideration when comparing Carisoprodol. Though both of them gave quite effective results, it was Carisoprodol all the way that proved quite effective along with a sedative control. Diazepam was another muscle relaxant which did not yield so productive results as Carisoprodol. Carisoprodol proved far more superior to diazepam in reducing the moderately severe low back pain and successful in alleviating the spasms that are caused by the muscles in the lower back.

Possible side-effects might result on using any of the muscle relaxants and same is the case even by using Carisoprodol. Proper recommendations and suggestions are a must to be taken when taking this drug. Since Carisoprodol works by suppressing those nerves that pass signals to the brain, dizziness and drowsiness are common symptoms one would experience on taking this medication. It is also suggested to clearly specify their problems and habits to the doctor before taking this muscle relaxant.
